Little Mountain Preserve

Two hundred fourteen acres of open space west of Novato

Rangers Recommend

  • Enjoy mostly flat trails with gentle switchbacks easing the incline.
  • Doe Hill Fire Road is an important link in the Bay Area Ridge Trail, an 8-mile route connecting Olompali State Park to the top of Indian Tree Preserve.
  • Little Mountain is also adjacent to Verissimo Hills Preserve, as well as Novato's O'Hair Park and North Marin Water District lands
  • Dogs are welcome. Dogs must be leashed on trail, and under voice command on fire roads, with leash readily available.

Naturalist Notes

  • Oak-studded grasslands grow on the southern slope. The heavily forested north slope drops off steeply to Novato Boulevard, providing wildland habitat.
  • Red-tailed hawks hunt the grassland on the south slope, Red-shouldered hawks hunt the dense forest on the north side.
  • Deer and foxes make their homes here.
  • Find lupine and other wildflowers blooming in spring.
  • During spring and summer look for western tiger swallowtail butterflies along the ridge.
